If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a noble task. Therefore an overseer must be above reproach. 1 TIMOTHY 3:1–2 The nobility of the pastoral office demands a correspondingly noble character. Churches must therefore seek men whose inner and outer lives are sewn together by integrity and Christlikeness. Paul lists “above reproach” as the second characteristic an elder must possess. “Above reproach” serves as an umbrella for all the other requirements that follow.
